What To Do With The Spare Room In Your Home

Collaboration

When we bought this house, we did so thinking that we'd need the spare room in the future. Either for growing our family, or if not, then the extra space would always come in handy and would give us many options. It's just a case of figuring out for what.

There are so many ideas to go for, and this could be down to what you need that extra space for, within your family, but it is good sometimes to get some outside help, or a bit of inspiration to help you decide what to do with you spare space.

Now, of course, it's important to remember that this room needs to be fit for purpose. So making sure the basics are up to scratch is paramount here. Is there a clean and neutral carpet (or flooring), are the walls painted or wallpapered to a modern style that you like, do you need replacement windows to bring in the light and hold in the heat. And of course, is there working heating in this room too, as you might spend quite a bit of time in there once it's sorted, so you want to make sure it's comfortable.

I thought I'd list my 3 top ideas, that I'm thinking about for ours, and you never know, these could give you a bit of inspiration for yours too...

Home Office
An office space is a really useful addition to any home and can help for not only you, but you kids too. Whether you work from home, like me, or just use it for catching up with work or filling in paperwork and bills, having an office gives you that space to store things like your computer, printer and any paperwork that usually takes over the house.

And if you do work from home, it can give you that space to get away from the family when you need peace to write too. I mean, we all know how hard it is to concentrate when the kids are on one. But also, an office can be a great place for children too. A desk to sit at when they're doing their homework, or a computer to use when they need to catch up on those sums.

You don't even need to go down the clean cut office vibe either. We have a comfortable chair instead of a computer chair, as I spend a lot of time sitting there and want to be comfortable. A large desk and plenty of storage are also a must to store everything.

Kids Space
Toys taking over the house? Then you could opt to make it a play room for the children. Plenty of storage, seating and maybe a bookshelf or 2, and this room could be the ideal space to store all those toys, books and other kids stuff that usually cover the house. You could even put in a little table with protective cloth over it so all their craft activities can be done here, so no paint is flung around the rest of the house.

Guest Room
I guess though, the most obvious thing to do is turn it into a guest bedroom. This is an ideal option if you do have a lot of guests staying over often, and don't want them sleeping in your front room for nights on end. What's more, if your really don't need this room, don't forget that you could make money by renting it out.

  1. Some great ideas - too many spare rooms are just used to store or hide away junk!

  9. I would love to have a spare room. I think a children's playroom is a great idea so you don't have toys everywhere x
